A very special Open Mic Night! The feature for this show will be none other than DEVON SPROULE, from Charlottesville, Va. Open Mic from 9 - 1. Devon goes on at 10:30 for approx. 45 minutes. Don't miss this!
It's a steamy August night in Downtown Roanoke, Virginia, and at a noisy little bar called the Green Dolphin Grille is the best open mic in town. The readers of the local City Magazine determined it the "best".
On this hot summer's eve, the open mic slots are pretty full by 9 o'clock, but 3 consecutive slots are reserved for the special feature performer. At 10:30, a wispy, pretty young lady sits at the microphone, handling her D-28 like an extension of her arms, hands and fingers.
The din of the patrons contiunues though the first 30 seconds of her first song and gradually subsides while the silky voice melds with the smooth, jazzy 7ths, 9ths and major 7ths coming so cleanly from the Martin.
By the end of that first song, it was obvious from the tremendous applause that Devon Sproule owned the stage and commanded the audience. Somewhat against their nature, they listened and dwelled upon the intricate guitar work and lyrical phrases reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel. And 45 minutes later, many of them went back to their socializing - but only after buying CDs containing many of the tunes they had heard this evening.
I have listened to the highly-acclaimed UPSTATE SONGS album, and though it is a fine example of the well-written music of Devon Sproule, no recording could capture the magic of this fine performer live.
Pity the folks who stayed home, thinking it was just an open mic.

It's a great listening room in a relaxed atmosphere. There will be an open mic for music and poetry between 7 and 8:15. We'll start promptly at 8:30. BRING FRIENDS!
What a great audience! We had a wonderful time and appreciate all who came out to listen. Your enthusiastic response energized us on stage.

This is a private concert for the residents of Edinburgh Square. I'll be appearing as "WOODY" with Sonny Campbell and Al Coffey. It's a special concert and tribute to Lillian Banks, who moved to Edinburgh Square from being my downstairs neighbor.
This was one of the most gratifying concerts I've ever done. Woody is never flawless, but the great energy of the group and the musicianship of Sonny and Al seem to overcome the shortcomings that result from our rare appearances together. We were right tight.
The audience of between 20 and 30 people, mostly the age range of our parents, were so appreciative and so courteous! They radiated our energy back at us for the entire length of the concert, and I hope it was as fun and memorable for them as it was for us. Thank you, residents of Edinburgh Square!
